Horse Family with Newborn Foal

A small band grazes a hillside in South Steens wild horse herd located south of Frenchglen, Oregon. The high desert country has rocky surfaces divided by deep canyons, rim rocks and plateaus. <br />

There are around 200 horses with lots of color--pinto, sorrel, bay palomino, brown, black, red roan and dun. This band of 18 is divided into several groups. Many young studs are coming of age and there were small challenges for dominance as the mares come into season. They drink at the waterhole and eat salt from the ground where they have carved out holes from an old lick.
