Aquaculture, Fisheries and Conservation Dept. of HK is trying to get fish farmers to certify their fish. AFCD has a pilot project where they test the fish for disease, heavy metals and things like that. Unfortunately, less than ten percent of the fish farmers have signed up for the program. The guys on the boat and the fish farm with umbrellas are part of the pilot project. The boat driver is Mr. Law Kwong-choi (+852 9832 2119) and the other guy in the boat is Mr. Law Tai-hei (9855 5420). And the main contact is the Fisheries Mgmnt Officer, Wo King-tai +852 2150 7085 or 9254 4633 and his email is foae2@afcd.gov.hk..Initially reef fish only came from the South China Sea, but transport developed and fish now come from all over S.E. Asia. The whole reef fish trade crashed with the 97-98 HK stock market crash. LRF trade is directly linked to economy. With China coming online financially the trade is booming. These fish are used for celebratory meals... not everyday fare. In China the company pays for meals and the stereotype is that there is lots of food left on the table. Often a fish is popular because of its color... more than its taste.
