Lights Blur By Toll House at Night

A shadowy figure stands in the door where wagons lined up 20 deep at Searights Tollhouse. It is one of six built in Pennsylvania when the U.S. turned the road--and its expense--over to the state in the mid-1830s. Designed by the Army Corps of Engineers, the buildings resemble lighthouses. Traffic streams the historic building at dusk.
