Karen Sussman's Gila herd of mustangs at the International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros in Lantry, South Dakota. They lived undisturbed in Arizona and hid from ranchers in the salt cedar for 100 years. They are bay colored with a dark mane and tail, a dark dorsal stripe and zebra striped markings on the back of their legs. Genetic testing shows they are descendants of horses brought by the Spanish conquistadors..
