Family Garden

Family members visit at the end of a reunion of the Caudill family at their homestead in Mud, W.V. The family fought the coal company in court to protect their ancestral home which stood in the way of plans to expand a the mine. The West Virginia Supreme Court ruled in 2004 that the Lincoln County family was wrongly forced to sell its home place to make way for a mountaintop removal mine. Justices said a lower court was wrong to discount the family's 'sentimental or emotional interests' in the property in favor of the economic concerns of a coal operator."
