Alexander watches as a dancer is possessed at a santeria held at her sister's house crowded with friends. Santeria is an amalgam of Catholic and Yoruba beliefs that Afro-Cuban slaves brought with them. Unlike Catholic saints, the deities or oreshas have human frailties. Concepts of original sin and final judgment are unknown and ancestral worship is practiced. Alexander is comfortable with her life as a transvestite, although gays have had difficult times in Cuba. In the 60s, they were arrested and reprogrammed. But in recent times are more relaxed attitude has emerged. Alexander was issued a government identification card as a woman.
